French tennis player Laurent Lokoli refused to shake hands with his opponent, Slovakia’s Martin Klizan, after Lokoli lost 7-6(4), 6-3, 4-6, 0-6, 6-4 Tuesday in the first round of the French Open.
Lokoli dismissed Klizan’s attempt at a handshake by waving off the Slovak because he found his “attitude” during the match “disrespectful,” according to the Associated Press. In a post-match interview, Lokoli said he believed that Klizan was “faking an injury.”
Klizan, on the other hand, urged reporters to ignore the story and insisting that he had “no comment” on the ignored handshake, according to TennisNow.com. However, the AP did report that Klizan spoke about a nagging pain in his calf, a problem that he said has been persistent on clay courts and made him think about skipping the French Open.
Despite the calf concern, Kilzan notched the win and will compete on Thursday against Andy Murray, the No. 1 ranked player in the world. Murray told the AP that he found the Klizan-Lokoli match “entertaining,” but commented in a personal column on BBC.com that the handshake dismissal was “unorthodox” and “in every match [he’s] played professionally, there’s always been a handshake at the end.”
